At least 13 people perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
